Italy: A Small Airfield Near Turin

Sal watched the private plane that had dropped him, Madigan, and Anja off at the airstrip disappear into the clouds. It had taken them a couple of hops to get clear of the Sahara Desert, and from Casablanca, Courtney had managed to arrange a private jet to take them across the Mediterranean.

He wasn’t sure how she’d managed that on such short notice, but he wouldn’t really complain. Getting their weapons and suits out of the Zoo would have been a headache without her help, so there was no looking this particular gift horse in the mouth.

The small airstrip was located outside of Turin, where they would wait for Courtney, Savage, and the others to arrive.

It was a bright, sunny day, he noted, and only a few tufts of clouds drifted through the atmosphere to complete the vista of an idyllic paradise. The airstrip had been created on a plateau above a small village nestled in a valley between two mountains. The very center of the valley had a snow-fed lake with a small river leading out of it. The settlement was built beside the lake, of course, although whether it had been established before the resorts he could see peppering the waterside or after was something he would like to take some time to discover.

This was as close as they’d come to proper civilization in a while. Since they’d gone with Courtney for her father’s funeral, actually, which felt like decades but was less than a year. It was totally weird how seeing a little town in the north of Italy was enough to make him nostalgic. This location could not look less like the places in which he had spent his time. Those had been mostly dry and arid when he was growing up. From there, he’d moved to California for his studies and then landed in the Zoo.

This was different and almost quaint. There were even forests growing in the distance, pushing up to the Alps so it looked like something straight out of a Disney movie.

Weird shit, he thought with a shake of his head.

“They should touch down in a few minutes,” Madigan said as she gave him a quick glance and squeezed his shoulder. “Are you sure about this, Sal? There is a reason why we have Savage on the team, remember, and it’s literally about pulling shit like this so we don’t have to.”

“Come on, didn’t you want to get out of the Zoo for a little while?” Sal grinned and slid his hand over hers. “Come out to Monte Carlo, stay in an actual hotel with actual chefs making actual food, maybe gamble a little while we try to find out who is trying to kill us and why, and perhaps even kill her.”

“Having an actual meal might be nice.” She grunted and shrugged. “And maybe a soak in a hot tub?”

“Oh, yes, the hot tub.” He chuckled. “I think I might join you for that.”

“Now that sounds like a plan.
